IFA's first Sustainability Village leads the tech industry's drive to go green

Berlin, 26 July 2023 ' This year's IFA Berlin will be home to its first Sustainability Village, with an on-site 'mend and repair shop', a dedicated exhibition area showcasing green innovation, plus a conference programme dedicated to sharing best sustainability practices across the industry. A House of Smart Living will give visitors a sense of living in a sustainable future.

Led by companies including Miele, the technology industry has embarked on a drive to reduce its emissions, aiming to do its part to meet the global target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 43% by 2030. For many companies, this means a rethink on how they manufacture their devices, provide their services, and how they can help consumers to reduce their emissions as they use these products.

"Businesses and consumers must work together to make our world a better and more sustainable place. For Miele, sustainability has been of great importance for decades. We are therefore delighted that IFA is focusing on this topic and are happy to support it", says Christoph Wendker, Vice President Corporate Sustainability at Miele.

Miele will be showcasing an interactive installation called 'Just Use Eco House' to help the public understand how a conscious use of home appliances can have a massive impact on their own consumption of water and energy.

At the heart of the Sustainability Village will be the House of Smart Living ' which will be presented by Germany's three electrotechnical associations VDE, ZVEH and ZVEI.

'The three German trade associations VDE, ZVEH and ZVEI are thrilled to be part of the IFA Sustainability Village and to present their House of Smart Living. It showcases technologies for energy efficiency, use of renewable energies and innovative climate control, all of which have a significant impact for a sustainable society. We are looking forward to explaining today's state of the art smart living technologies to IFA's visitors.' - Carine Chardon, Director Consumer, ZVEI.

From 1 - 4 September, the Sustainability Village will host a programme of talks and panels, where industry leaders will discuss key issues like the role of sustainability in times of multiple crisis. The integration of sustainable technologies in future homes at the point of their construction is another topic, alongside strategies for green economic growth, consumer views on electrification, green investing, e-waste and the circular economy, and the role of robotics in sustainability.

  • Knut Hechtfischer, CEO, Decarbonize
